TL;DR

  • Yes — ProphetX is a real, CFTC-approved exchange, approved June 2026 as a DCM and DCO.
  • It settles real-money sports event contracts; the old sweepstakes currencies are retired.
  • Identity verification and geolocation are required, and Nevada is excluded.
  • Legit does not mean safe money — contracts can settle at zero.

Prediction markets price events in cents, not odds. Here is the vocabulary used on this page, in plain English.

Price = probability
A contract that pays $1 trading at 12¢ means the market thinks there's a 12% chance.
YES / NO share
YES pays $1 if it happens. NO pays $1 if it doesn't. You can never lose more than you paid.
Implied chance
Just the price read as a percentage. A contract at 14¢ implies a 14% chance.
Vig
A built-in margin some venues charge. On prediction markets you pay the spread and fees instead.
Liquidity
How much money is in the market. More money means you can get in and out at the price you see.

Short answer: yes. ProphetX is a federally regulated exchange, not an offshore app. The useful question is what that regulation covers and what it doesn't.

What the CFTC approval means

In June 2026 the CFTC approved ProphetX as a designated contract market (it can list contracts) and a derivatives clearing organization (it can clear and settle them itself). That's the same category of oversight that applies to Kalshi. It means federal rules on market conduct, settlement and customer funds — it does not mean your positions are protected from losing.

The sweepstakes history

Older reviews describe Prophet Points and Prophet Cash. That model ended with the CFTC approval. If a page still tells you ProphetX is a sweepstakes app, it's out of date.

Verification and eligibility

You verify your identity and ProphetX checks your location at sign-up. It's live in 49 states plus D.C., with Nevada excluded — the full list is on our state availability page. A VPN isn't a workaround; it's a good way to get an account frozen.

What could still go wrong

  • You lose the trade. Contracts settle at $1 or $0. That's the deal.
  • Thin market. Small college markets can have a wide gap between buy and sell.
  • Offer terms. The code COLLEGEPM offer has conditions set by ProphetX and shown in the app.
  • Taxes. Gains are reportable — see our guide to prediction market taxes.

18+ only. New traders only. Offer terms are set by ProphetX and may change. Event contract trading involves risk, including loss of the funds you commit. ProphetX is a CFTC-regulated designated contract market and derivatives clearing organization. Not available in all states.

A contract settles at $1 if the event happens and $0 if it doesn't, so the price is the market's probability. Every contract you buy at this price pays $1 — the cheaper the price, the less likely the market thinks it is.

Your first trade, step by step

  1. Fund a small balanceOpen an account, verify your ID, and deposit $10–$20 by debit or ACH. You must be 18+ and in an eligible state.
  2. Find the marketSearch the event by team, player or headline. Check the price and the volume — thin markets move a lot on small orders.
  3. Read the price as a probabilityA 23¢ YES contract means the market gives it about a 23% chance. If you think it is higher than that, YES is the value side.
  4. Place a limit orderEnter the price you want rather than taking the market. You buy shares, not a bet slip — the most you can lose is what you paid.
  5. Decide your exitYou can sell any time before the event resolves, or hold to settlement where each winning share pays $1.

Ready to try it: open ProphetX. 18+, eligible states only. Trade what you can afford to lose.

Frequently asked questions

Is ProphetX legit?

Yes. ProphetX was approved by the CFTC in June 2026 as both a designated contract market and a derivatives clearing organization, and launched nationwide the same month. It requires identity verification and uses geolocation to confirm eligibility.

Does ProphetX pay out real money?

Yes. Winning contracts settle at $1 each and funds are withdrawable through online banking, wire or crypto. ProphetX takes roughly 2% of net winnings.

Is ProphetX a sweepstakes app?

Not any more. Prophet Points and Prophet Cash were part of the pre-approval model that was retired in 2026. It now runs as a regulated real-money exchange.

Who is behind ProphetX?

ProphetX was founded in 2018 by Dean Sisun and Jake Benzaquen and started as a licensed peer-to-peer trading marketplace in the UK before entering the US market.

What are the actual risks?

Losing your stake. A contract that settles NO is worth $0. Thin markets can also mean a wide spread, so you pay more to get in and receive less to get out.

What does the price actually mean?

A contract settles at $1 if the event happens and $0 if it doesn't, so the price is the market's probability. A contract at 23¢ means roughly a 23% chance, and $1 buys about 4.3 shares.

How much money do I need to start?

You can place a real trade with $10–$20. Contracts are priced in cents, so a $20 balance buys dozens of shares on a cheap market. Start small until you have seen a position settle.
