Volume — definition
Total notional value of shares traded over a given period, usually 24 hours.
Volume is the standard proxy for how 'live' a market is. High volume = many traders, fresh prices, tighter spreads.
Don't confuse 24h volume with open interest. Volume measures activity; open interest measures money still on the table.
